Al Maktoum International Airport in Dubai is embarking on an ambitious project to construct a 50-kilometer autonomous people mover network designed to shuttle passengers across its expansive airport complex via nine stations. The construction of this underground driverless rail system is slated for completion by December 2031, aligning with the scheduled opening of the airport’s first phase in 2032. As the airport undergoes further development, this network is set to expand to 14 stations, positioning it as the largest automated people mover system globally, surpassing those at airports like Dallas Fort Worth and New York’s JFK.
Once fully operational, Al Maktoum International is projected to accommodate up to 260 million passengers and manage 12 million tonnes of cargo annually. The inaugural phase of this airport development will feature the West Terminal, Concourse 1, and the new people mover system, effectively boosting passenger capacity to 130 million each year. This expansion marks a significant milestone in the airport’s strategic growth plan, enhancing its infrastructure to meet future demands.
In addition to the internal transportation advancements, the airport will enjoy enhanced connectivity through a planned Airport Express Link, bridging Al Maktoum International with Dubai International Airport. This initiative is part of a broader vision to integrate the airport with regional transport networks, which includes potential connections to Etihad Rail and the Dubai Metro, facilitating greater accessibility and convenience for travelers.
