Dubai International Airport (DXB) is poised to maintain its status as the world’s busiest international airport, despite experiencing a steep drop in passenger numbers during the second quarter of 2026. This decline, attributed to regional conflict and resulting flight disruptions, saw DXB handling only 13 million passengers from April to June, a significant decrease from the 22.5 million passengers in the same timeframe the previous year. Overall, the airport’s passenger traffic for the first half of the year plummeted to 31.5 million, marking a 31.3% year-on-year decline.
Paul Griffiths, the CEO of Dubai Airports, remains optimistic about the rebound of passenger traffic in the latter half of the year. He anticipates that as international airlines resume operations, and as Emirates and flydubai reestablish the majority of their routes, the volume of travelers will increase. Despite the downturn, Dubai International Airport is projected to manage around 70 million passengers throughout 2026, a decrease from the 95.2 million passengers it accommodated last year. The airport’s ambitious goal of reaching 100 million annual passengers has consequently been deferred to 2027.
Currently, DXB has restored its operations to roughly 86% of its pre-conflict capacity and is being served by 56 airlines, down from approximately 90 before the disruptions began. The airport is focusing on further recovery, particularly during the winter travel season, when more international carriers are expected to reintroduce flights. Notably, India, Saudi Arabia, and the United Kingdom continue to be major sources of passenger traffic for the airport.
Griffiths’ confidence is underpinned by the gradual restoration of airline services and the strategic importance of DXB as a global transit hub. The airport’s ability to bounce back partially from the recent downturn highlights its resilience and importance in the global aeronautical landscape. As DXB works towards restoring full capacity, its focus remains on ensuring that it can handle the anticipated increase in passenger numbers while maintaining its position as a key player in international aviation.
