The United Arab Emirates is actively working to diversify its energy export routes and trade channels, aiming to lessen its reliance on the Strait of Hormuz amid ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran. Anwar Gargash, an adviser to the UAE president, emphasized that the nation’s energy exports and economic activities should not be jeopardized by the conflict. In response, the UAE is increasing port capacities on its eastern coast and is investing in the development of pipelines, railways, and new trade corridors.
Despite the possibility of improved relations with Iran in the future, Gargash expressed that rebuilding trust after recent attacks could take significant time. He urged for enhanced cooperation among Gulf Arab states to address regional security challenges. Qatar echoed this sentiment, with Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed al-Ansari emphasizing the importance of strategic ties with the United States while advocating for greater self-reliance among Gulf countries.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical area of concern as it facilitates a substantial portion of global energy supplies. Disruptions in this vital waterway have led to increased energy prices and heightened global economic worries. Given its significance, Gargash insisted that freedom of navigation should not be leveraged as a bargaining chip, calling for reliable assurances to safeguard Gulf nations against potential future attacks.
