The Zayed Sustainability Prize, hailing from the United Arab Emirates, has seen an unprecedented number of applications for its 2027 awards cycle, amassing 10,233 submissions from 177 nations. This marks a substantial 32% increase compared to the previous year, showcasing the prize’s growing influence and reach. The award celebrates groundbreaking projects that tackle major global issues such as climate action, health, food, energy, and water, alongside initiatives from global high schools.
In a bid to honor these innovative efforts, the prize awards each winner in the climate, health, food, energy, and water categories with a $1 million prize. Those who reach the finalist stage are granted $150,000. Additionally, six high schools that emerge victorious will each receive $150,000, with their finalist counterparts pocketing $25,000. This financial recognition underscores the prize’s commitment to fostering solutions that better communities worldwide.
Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, the Director General of the Zayed Sustainability Prize, emphasized that the surge in participation signals a heightened global appetite for pragmatic and inventive solutions aimed at enhancing quality of life. Notably, over two-thirds of the applications originated from developing and emerging economies, with the climate action category attracting the most entries, reflecting a widespread commitment to environmental sustainability.
As anticipation builds, the announcement of finalists is slated for September, setting the stage for the awards ceremony where the winners will be celebrated on January 12, 2027. This event will spotlight the leading innovations that hold the potential to drive significant progress in addressing some of the world’s most pressing challenges.
