In a significant leadership reshuffle at Google DeepMind, co-founder Sir Demis Hassabis is stepping down as chief executive. Hassabis, who established the AI research unit in 2010, will transition to a new role as chair of the organization and chief scientist at Alphabet, the parent company of Google. As part of the restructuring, DeepMind’s chief technology officer, Koray Kavukcuoglu, will ascend to the position of senior vice-president and head of the organization. He will maintain his role as chief executive of Isomorphic Labs, a drug-discovery firm that originated from DeepMind.
The leadership transition coincides with the exit of several key Google AI engineers. Among them, Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat have announced their departure to establish a new venture, Discovery Loop, which will specialize in machine learning, science, and engineering research.
