The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has issued a strong condemnation of recent threats made by the Houthi group towards Saudi Arabia, which include the possibility of imposing a maritime blockade. The UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has called on the global community to ensure the enforcement of pertinent United Nations Security Council resolutions related to Yemen and maintaining maritime security in the Red Sea.
Particularly, the UAE ministry emphasized the importance of Resolution 2216, which pertains to the situation in Yemen, and Resolution 2722, which is crucial for safeguarding navigation rights and ensuring free movement in the Red Sea. These resolutions are seen as vital frameworks for maintaining stability and security in the region.
Reaffirming the principles of international law, the UAE highlighted that freedom of navigation in international waters is protected under the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. The convention is a key legal cornerstone for upholding maritime rights and ensuring that such freedoms are respected globally.
In expressing its position, the UAE reiterated its unwavering solidarity with Saudi Arabia. The ministry voiced its support for any actions taken to safeguard the kingdom’s security and stability amidst the ongoing threats.
